Replacement

GP Technologies engineered a complete replacement of obsolete OEM generator and engine protection and control systems for an emergency generation facility. The existing OEM controllers presented two critical risks: deteriorating reliability due to component age and obsolescence, and locked-down proprietary software that prevented independent access, diagnostics, and maintenance.

The replacement solution migrated all generator protection, excitation control, and engine supervision to open-source accessible platforms — restoring reliability and eliminating dependency on OEM service access. The scope included replacement of generator instrument transformers and engine transducers, and extended to underfrequency load shedding analysis, design, and commissioning including synchronization, parallel unit load sharing, and load shedding verification.

Project Delivery

01
OEM Controller Replacement
Obsolete proprietary generator controllers, AVRs, and engine controllers replaced with open-source accessible platforms — restoring operational reliability and eliminating the locked-down OEM software barrier that had prevented independent diagnostics, configuration changes, and maintenance access.
02
Generator & Engine Sensor Interface
New generator instrument transformers and engine transducers installed throughout — replacing aging sensors for oil pressure, coolant pressure, oil temperature, and coolant temperature with calibrated modern equivalents wired and commissioned to the new control platform.
03
Protection Element Configuration
All generator protection and control elements configured from first principles — including overcurrent, undervoltage, overvoltage, reverse power, loss of excitation, over/underfrequency, differential protection, and engine protective shutdowns — fully documented and coordinated against the system protection study.
04
Underfrequency Load Shedding
A full underfrequency load shedding scheme was analysed and designed to protect generation units against sustained underfrequency conditions — with staged load shedding steps sized and timed to stabilize generation frequency during loss-of-supply events without unnecessarily tripping critical loads.
05
Synchronization & Load Sharing
Commissioning included full synchronization testing and parallel unit load sharing verification — confirming that generators synchronize correctly to the bus, accept load in a balanced and stable manner across multiple units, and respond predictably to load changes under automatic governor and AVR control.
06
Panel Design & Fabrication
SymCore Systems fabricated the generator and engine protection and control panel to UL 508A and CSA C22.2 No.14 standards — integrating the new controller, AVR, engine supervision module, I/O, power supplies, and field terminations in a single certified enclosure designed and drawn by GP Technologies.
